End of year report – Dec 2017

December 10th: Askeaton Invitation Gala.

25 swimmers (age 9 yrs old – 15 yrs old) with their parent(s) braved the cold and snow on Sunday the 10th December and headed for Askeaton Invitational Gala. This was their opportunity to improve on times achieved 6 weeks previously at the Nenagh Invitational Gala. All that hard work and dedication in the pool paid off as swimmers achieved Personnel best (PB) again and again. The camaraderie and team work was very evident on the day as all swimmers made very vocal their support for whichever of their teammates was competing in the 41 events.

With swimmers achieving new personal bests, we brought home a whopping 18 medals. With 6 gold, 3 silver and 9 bronze medals it was a successful day for all. Congrats to Brendan Quinn (Age 13-14) who came in on top in all three of his events (100 free, 100 breast and 100 Individual Medley (IM)) Shane Mc Ateer and Odhran O’ Driscoll (Age 15-16) picked up gold and silver respectively in the IM event. Super achievement for the coaches and swimmers. Brendan Quinn moved up one level with reaching the cut off times for level 1. Sarah Gleeson got one step closer to be a level 2 swimmer in the 50m fly and did Ellarose Craven in her 100FC.  Thank you to the coach, Cathy Craven who gave huge support and advice throughout the day.

December 15th: Irish Short Course Championships

These championships are the highlight of the year’s short course season before the long course season starts. A lot of hard work & dedication goes into the time leading up to the championships as well as a few nerve-wrecking seconds at the Munster SC Championships when coach and swimmers were waiting for the magic numbers to appear on the timing board stating that the required qualifying times were reached.
This is the second year that swimmers qualified to take part in the Irish Short Course (SC) Championships. All our club members, committee members, coaches were extremely proud of Shane McAteer and Christine Ryan, both 15 years old who travelled to Lisburn, County Antrim with Coach Uta Fietch. Shane competed in the 50m Butterfly and achieved personnel best with a time of 30.11 secs.  Christine was up next and 50m Backcrawl. Christine had a great start with a fantastic first 25m swim. Her turn took her a bit by surprise but she was able to pick up the speed again and finished the 50m in 32.24 which is just a little outside her personal best.

Well done Shane and Christine.

18th December: Junior Intra-Club Gala and club disco.

With Christmas just around the corner swimmers and parents from Nenagh Neptune Swimming Club enjoyed a very special event together: a Christmas Swim Gala for our youngest members run by their older teammates.

26 junior swimmers aged 7-14 completed 4 events over 25m and won a total of 26 gold, 23 silver and 15 bronze medals. Well done and well deserved to all!

Swimmers from our intermediate and senior squad did a fantastic job acting as time keepers, lane supporters, team managers, callers, messengers, recorders, starters and medal presenters … basically running the event.

The gala finished with the Cannon relay in which swimmers from all squads swim together as one team, starting with the youngest, finishing with the oldest.
Thanks to every single one of the 32 young helpers and all the supporting parents in the gallery or on deck this Christmas gala was a huge success.

The final highlight of the evening was a disco organized by Roxy. Parents and swimmers alike were welcome to dance and chat and have fun which they all did.

No Christmas party without a Secret Santa! And so all 64 swimmers received their little gift from a secret friend before heading home.
A big thank you to Tom Mackey and all his staff members for accommodating us and for all their help in the past weeks. It is noticed and much appreciated.
Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!
