A Busy Three Weeks

It’s been a busy few weeks for the club with galas every weekend at the moment. We have had a good spread of swimmers qualifying for some of the bigger meets in the Munster Region recently and we also had the opportunity to get our very youngest swimmers into their first competition at a novice gala in Portlaoise – thanks Laoise Marlins. Nenagh Neptune attended 3 galas between 21st March and 12th April.

Muster Long Course Championships – UL 21st and 22nd March

Even with the undeniably tough qualifying times, Nenagh Neptune were represented at this gala by five of our swimmers. Competition was fierce with all of our swimmers finding the long course (50m pool) swims tiring. Congratulations goes out to Sinead and Emily who claimed personal bests on the day and particularly to Emily who knocked nearly 10 seconds off her time in the 400m freestyle – well done.

Novice Gala – Portlaoise 28th March

A good day was had by all our novice swimmers in the Laois Marlins Gala which took place on March 28th. This would have been the first competitive gala for most of our novice swimmers but they certainly rose to the task. There were some notable PBs on the day and well done to Cillian Smith who was rewarded with a 3rd place in the 50m butterfly for his efforts. Well done to all swimmers who took part and thanks Cathy for all the help. Many thanks to Coach Fiona Corbett for her guidance, advice and support to all the swimmers on the day.

Munster Age Groups Division 2 – UL Arena 10th to 12th April

This gala never fails to produce some great competition every year, both between the many Munster clubs represented at the event and also between our own swimmers. This year was no exception. The rivalry definitively drove the competitive streak for the 16 Nenagh Neptune swimmers in attendance and we saw some great PBs from our swimmers who were supported on the day by coach Chris Harris. Congratulations to Sarah Seymour and Lily O’Brien who knocked over 18 seconds each off their times in the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke respectively.

Thanks to all our coaching staff for their dedication and to all parents who turn up to support our swimmers and volunteer for official duties for the required sessions.

All results of the above galas are posted on our results page.

Officials Required for Munster DIV II

We are still short volunteers to cover the required timekeeping and turn judge slots on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Please forward your interest to nnscrecorder@gmail.com or text the club phone. Guidance will be provided on the day so even if you have not done this before this is a great opportunity to gain some experience in timekeeping and turn judging.

Please note that clubs who do not provide the required officials will be subject to a fine of €50 per official per session

Swim Ireland’s Swim for A Mile Challenge

Swim Ireland’s Swim for A Mile Challenge is back for 2015. Swim for a Mile 2015 will take place from May 18th – 22nd Nationwide with five flagship pools in Cork (Leisureworld, Bishopstown), Limerick (UL Sport, University of Limerick), Galway (Kingfisher NUI Galway), Bangor (Banger Aurora) and Dublin (National Aquatic Centre, Blanchardstown) as well as many other pools across the country taking part.

In 2014 a huge number of people, all of varying abilities took part in swims in the five flagship pools and in 2015 we want even more people able to access the programme. The swim is ideal for anyone looking to get back into swimming, or looking to set themselves a challenge. We are offering a discounted entry fee of €20 for all Swim Ireland club members. Just enter SwimClub in the Promotional Code box before the 20th April.

With just under 6 weeks to go until the swim there is still plenty of time to register and get training. Training programmes are available on the Swim for a Mile website (www.swimforamile.com) to help you build up to swim the mile along with tips and video demonstrations, and a number of centres are offering reduced rates for a Swim for a Mile coaching session every week. There are also a number of free Coaching Clinics running in the flagship pools, with one of our Irish Olympians, between now and the start of the challenge (these Clinics are open to all registered participants, not just those registered in the flagship pools). The next weekend of these Clinics takes place from the 17th to the 19th April.

Each person who takes part in the swim will be timed and will receive splits for the various distance on the way to the mile. These times may help you if you wish to join a Masters club after the event or if you wish to take part in a Triathlon. There will also be a goodie bag for each participant.

You can register now at http://www.swimforamile.com/register/ why not make the decision to take on the challenge for our Charity Partner – The Simon Communities?

So what are you waiting for!? Register for the swim and then download the programme and GET SWIMMING!
